About

Obesity is the abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body that presents a health risk.


CAUSE
Obesity could be passed down from your genes, gained through diseases, or through your lifestyle. As it is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expected, it could be caused by the increased intake of dense foods high in fats and sugar. Increase in physical inactivity could also cause obesity.


BODY MASS INDEX
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the common method to classify obesity and overweight. The rough guide is a calculation of your weight over your height squared. A BMI equal to or above 25 is considered overweight and a BMI equal to or above 30 is classified overweight. Other methods to measure obesity is through waist measurements.


RISKS AND CONSEQUENCES
Obesity could pose multiple consequences and health risks including: High blood pressure (hypertension), Dyslipidemia, Type 2 diabetes, Coronary heart diseases, Stroke, Gall bladder disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep apnea and breathing problems, Cancer, Low quality of life, Mental illnesses, Body pain


PREVENTION
To avoid the health risk, there are many ways to prevent obesity. These include limiting energy intake, increase consumption of fruits and vegetables and engagement in physical activities. For the food industry, they could consider reducing fat, sugar and salt content, ensuring healthy food options are available, restrict market and support activity in the workplace.

Statistics

The total obesity numbers worldwide has nearly tripled since 1975.

The following are current statistics concerning obesity or overweight.
-680M were obese in 2016
-1 in 4 children (aged 2-17) were overweight or obese in 2017-18
-2 in 3 adults were obese or overweight (31% obese) in 2017-18
-1 in 3 Australian adults were obese in 2017-18 (an increase from 1 in 5 in 1995)
-Studies have shown that obesity is more prevalent in adult men (over 18)
